Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest

The 2009 Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest from Coney Island, N.Y., will air on ESPN Saturday, July 4, from 12-1 p.m.  Competitors from all over the world include defending champion Joey Chestnut (U.S.) and Japan’s Takeru Kobayashi, who had won six consecutive years.

In advance of the 2009 event, ESPNU will reair the previous five Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest on July 3 beinning at 12 a.m. (July 2, 9 p.m. PT).   Last year, American Joey Chestnut took home his second title in a row after downing 59 hotdogs and beating six-time champion Takeru Kobayashi after the two tied and Chestnut was the first to finish five hotdogs in extra time. 

Rugby

USA Rugby: World Cup Qualifier from Charleston, S.C. featuring the U.S. vs. Canada will air live on ESPN Saturday, July 4, at 5 p.m.

Major League Baseball

The 2009 Home Run Derby live on ESPN, ESPN Radio, ESPN Deportes and ESPN360.com Monday, July 13, at 8 p.m. hosted at Busch Stadium.  The Derby is traditionally ESPN’s highest-rated summer program.  On the eve of the Derby, ESPN’s July 12 Sunday Night Baseball will be in town as the St. Louis Cardinals host the Chicago Cubs at 8 p.m. 

  • 2009 Future Stars Game, Sunday, July 12, at 2 p.m. on ESPN2.
  • All-Star Celebrity Softball Game Monday, July 13, at 10 p.m. on ESPN.
  • AAA All-Star Game, Wednesday, July 15, at 10 p.m. on ESPN2.

British Open Golf

The third and final rounds of The British Open, from Turnberry, Scotland, will be televised on ABC Saturday, July 18, and Sunday, July 19, at 9 a.m.

Softball

Some of the top women’s softball teams from around the world will participate in the 2009 KFC World Cup of Softball from Oklahoma City, Okla.  ESPN will combine with ESPN2 to televise live the five-day event July 16-20, including the championship game Monday, July 20 at 9 p.m.  The U.S. National Team is the defending champion.

Poker

In anticipation of the 2009 World Series of Poker on ESPN later this month, ESPN Classic will reair the entire 2008 World Series of Poker on Saturday, July 18, and Sunday, July 19. The marathon begins at 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 18, and concludes at midnight on Sunday, July 19, totaling 33 hours of poker.

ESPYs

The 17th annual ESPYs will take place at the NOKIA Theatre L.A. LIVE, a world-class 7,100-seat venue located across the street from STAPLES Center in downtown Los Angeles. The 2009 ESPYs will be televised Sunday, July 19, at 9 p.m. on ESPN and ESPN HD with additional unique content available on a variety of ESPN multimedia platforms, including ESPN.com and ESPN International.

MLB

Sunday Night Baseball (July 19) will see the N.Y. Mets visiting the Atlanta Braves at a special 6 p.m. start time.

Golf

ABC will televise the final two rounds of the Senior British Open from Berkshire, England, on Saturday, July 25, at 2 p.m. and Sunday, July 26 at 1 p.m.

Football

ESPNU will air the SEC College Football media days from Wednesday, July 22 to Friday, July 24. Four of the country’s top coaches, Florida’s Urban Meyer, Georgia’s Mark Richt, LSU’s Les Miles and Alabama’s Nick Saban are SEC coaches. Media Day will be aired from 9:30-2 p.m. and 7-11:30 p.m. on Friday.

The Orange County High School All-Star Football Game will be aired exclusively on ESPNU on Saturday, July 25 from 9-11:30 p.m.

ESPN RISE

The ESPN RISE Games presented by Target, will be aired exclusively on ESPNU from Saturday, July 25 to Wednesday, July 29.  The five-day event begins with the Under Armour High School All-America Softball Game on July 25 from 7-9 p.m.

Soccer

ESPN Deportes will televise live the inaugural World Football Challenge Sunday, July 19 – Sunday, July 26. Four international soccer powerhouses – Club America, Inter Milan, Chelsea and AC Milan – will compete in a round-robin tournament at six locations in the U.S.

Auto Racing

ESPN Classic will televise a “Brickyard Week” starting Monday, July 20, at 6 p.m. with the first Brickyard, the 1994 Brickyard 400. Jeff Gordon came away with the checkered flag in ’94. On Tuesday, July 21, at 6 p.m. Classic will re-air Dale Earnhardt’s victory in Indianapolis, the 1995 Brickyard 400 and at the same time on Wednesday, July 22, Classic will show the 2000 Brickyard 400 won by Bobby Labonte. To wrap up the “Brickyard Week”, Classic will air the 2007 Allstate 400 at the Brickyard won by Tony Stewart on Thursday, July 23, at 6 p.m. 

College Bass

ESPNU and ESPN2 will show exclusive coverage of The Under Armour College Bass National Championship from Arkansas River in North Little Rock, Ark., on Saturday, July 25 from 2-3 p.m.

X Games 15
ESPN will kick off X Games 15, the world’s premier action sports event, on Thursday, July 30, at 9 p.m. with X Games host Sa
l Masekela. The network will combine with ESPN2 and ABC to televise more than 20 live hours July 30 – August 2 – all available in high definition.  Additional coverage will be provided via ESPN360.com, EXPN.com, ESPN Classic, ESPN International, SportsCenter and ESPN2’s X Center.

In addition, ESPN2 will provide a behind-the-scenes view with X Games 15 All Access Preview, Thursday, July 23, at 2 a.m. (July 22 at 11 p.m.)

On Wednesday, July 29, ESPN Classic will televise the 2008 X Games Classix marathon. Six hours of action from the 2008 Summer X Games, starting at 2 p.m. with the 2008 Champions, and followed at 3 p.m. by Skate and BMX competitions. 

MLB

Hall of Fame Induction Ceremonies, Monday, July 27, at 9 p.m. on ESPN2. (This year’s inductees are Ricky Henderson and Jim Rice.)

Auto Racing

The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series returns to ESPN with the Allstate 400 at the Brickyard live from Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Sunday, July 26, at 2 p.m.  The race is the first of 17 NASCAR Sprint Cup events on ESPN or ABC to close out the 2009 NASCAR season. ESPN airs live NASCAR Sprint Cup qualifying on Saturday, July 25, at 4:30 p.m., and the practice session for the NASCAR Sprint Cup cars on the famed 2.5-mile track, on ESPN2, earlier that day at 12:30 p.m.

Poker

ESPN’s exclusive coverage of the 2009 World Series of Poker presented by Milwaukee’s Best Light, the world’s premier poker tournament, will begin Tuesday, July 28, at 8 p.m., and continuing each Tuesday, generally at 8 p.m.  Norman Chad and Lon McEachern will return to provide complete analysis of the players and games.

Golf

ESPN will televise live the U.S. Senior Open Golf Championship July 30 (first round) and July 31 (second round) from 1-5 p.m. both days.


Soccer

ESPN2 will air live the 2009 MLS All-Star Game, Wednesday, July 29, at 9:30 p.m. from Salt Lake City,Utah.

ESPN RISE  

Four games from the AAU Super Showcase presented by Champion, featuring some of the country’s top basketball recruits, will be aired July 26 from 5-9 p.m. and on July 27 from 6-10 a.m. and 5-9 p.m.

The Champion Gridiron Kings 7-on-7 high school football tournament will air Wednesday, July 29 from 5-6 p.m. and the ESPN RISE Games studio show will review all the action from 7-7:30 p.m. and 11:30-12 a.m.
