Chris Hassel joined ESPN in January 2013 as anchor of SportsCenter and Highlight Express on ESPNEWS.

 Prior to joining ESPN, Hassel served as sports anchor/reporter at WHO-TV in Des Moines, Iowa (2007-13), and radio personality at KXNO-AM (2010-13). Previously, he anchored weekend sportscasts for the Fox affiliate in the Quad Cities, and was the morning drive-time news anchor/play-by-play sportscaster for WOC-AM in Davenport.

 His career jump-started in 2005 when he entered the “Sports Announcer Wannabe Contest”  in Des Moines, and won the chance to call an Iowa football game on the Hawkeye Radio Network. He was named 2012 Iowa Sportscaster-of-the-Year by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association.

 Hassel is a 2007 graduate of St. Ambrose University in Davenport. His middle name is Ryne, given to him by his father – a Cubs’ fan — for 1984 National League MVP, Ryne Sandberg. He married his high school sweetheart in their hometown of Muscatine, Iowa in 2007.
