Senior Vice President, Programming & Global X
Scott Guglielmino serves as senior vice president, programming and X Games, at ESPN, responsible for the company’s multiplatform domestic soccer (FIFA, UEFA, USSF, MLS) strategy and all aspects of the X Games franchise. Guglielmino, who joined ESPN in 1993 and has advanced in the programming department, was promoted to senior vice president in June 2010.
Since 1998, Guglielmino has played a significant role in ESPN’s soccer coverage. He was a major contributor in the decision to televise the highly successful FIFA Women’s World Cup in 1999, and continues to oversee the company’s plans for the FIFA World Cup and FIFA Women’s World Cup tournaments, as ESPN have rights for these properties in the United States through 2014. He led the largest and most comprehensive commitment of resources to one sporting event in ESPN’s history – the highly successful 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa.
Guglielmino also has overseen brand extension efforts for ESPN’s X Games, which have enabled ESPN to establish the leading global action sports brand. In May of 2011, ESPN announced the global expansion of X Games to include six events around the world. Under Guglielmino’s direction, the X Games kicks off a new era with new events in Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil; Barcelona, Spain; and Munich, Germany. Joining the existing world-class events in Aspen, Colo.; Los Angeles, Calif.; and Tignes, France, this expansion will be the first of its kind for the X Games franchise in size, scope and scale and will also highlight new and unique lifestyle, cultural and digital elements around the world.
Guglielmino has been involved in ESPN Content Development, formerly ESPN Original Entertainment, since its infancy, including the development and launch of Two Minute Drill. He was the planner of record for the highly acclaimed and award-winning ESPN SportsCentury series, coordinating early development of the overall project.
Guglielmino originally started at ESPN as a freelance statistics coordinator for College GameDay in 1993. He was hired as a full-time screener in November 1993. Since then, he has worked on a variety of major sports properties and initiatives and has been promoted to planner, senior planner, director and to vice president in 2004.
Guglielmino directed the return of NASCAR to ESPN and ABC in 2007 across ESPN’s multimedia assets, including television, Internet, radio, print, broadband and wireless. His areas of responsibility included daily interaction with all entities: event and studio production, customer marketing and sales, affiliate sales and marketing, consumer marketing, research, legal, communications and finance.
Guglielmino played a key role in ESPN’s 2005 acquisition of the Monday Night Football franchise and coordinated the company’s negotiation preparation for both ESPN and ABC Sports. While managing the NFL relationship, Guglielmino directed ESPN’s Hurricane Relief Telethon efforts in fall 2005 in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, coordinating network and cable affiliates across the country and ultimately raising $5 million for victims of the natural disaster in the Gulf Coast region.
Guglielmino was graduated in 1992 from the University of Connecticut with a bachelor’s degree in communications science. A native and resident of Cheshire, Conn., Guglielmino continues to lend his expertise to the Parks & Recreation department in his hometown, where he helped create a local skate park.
