Michael Kim joined ESPNEWS, ESPN’s 24-hour sports news network, as an anchor prior to its November 1, 1996, launch. Kim is currently an anchor on SportsCenter, ESPN’s flagship sports news and information program.
Kim, who had been at NewsChannel 8 (located in Springfield, Va.) since September, 1991, covered a variety of local sports for the cable station serving the Washington, D.C.area. In 1993, Kim earned a local Emmy for sports reporting from the Capital Region Chapter for a series called Local Heroes, which was also recognized as the “Best Sports Series” by the Society of Professional Journalists. Kim also captured an award from the National Association of Black Journalists for “Best Sports Feature.”
Prior to NewsChannel 8, Kim worked as a sports reporter for KOMU-TV inColumbia,Mo., from June 1990 to September 1991. A native ofColumbia,Mo., Kim earned a bachelor of arts degree in political science and business administration fromWestminsterCollege(Fulton) in 1987 and a master of arts degree in journalism from theUniversityofMissouriin 1991. In May 2008, Kim received an honorary doctorate of humane letters fromWestminster College.
