David Pahl is senior vice president and general counsel in ESPN’s legal department. The legal department oversees all of ESPN’s legal affairs, including contracts, litigation, trademark and copyright issues, employment and labor law, real estate and other general corporate and regulatory matters. In addition to departmental oversight, Pahl is the principal liaison with the chief legal officers of ESPN’s parent companies, The Walt Disney Company and The Hearst Corporation.
Pahl joined ESPN in 1987 as an assistant general counsel. He was promoted to associate general counsel in 1989, to vice president and associate general counsel in 1994 and to his current position in 1996. Prior to joining ESPN, Pahl was an associate attorney at Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton and Garrison, of New York (1981-87). Previously, he was an associate attorney for Stroock and Stroock and Lavan, also of New York (1979-81).
A native of Kent, Ohio, Pahl graduated from Beloit College in Wisconsin in 1975 with a bachelor of arts degree in history. He earned his law degree from the University of Michigan in 1979.
