Damon Phillips was named vice president, technical product management in February 2017, reporting to Aaron LaBerge, ESPN Chief Technology Officer. In this role, Phillips leads a technical product management team that serves as the conduit into Technology for the company. Phillips provides strategic counsel to company leaders on how to leverage technology to enhance content, operations and monetization efforts. He manages the Technology division’s relationship with internal departments including: Production, Programming, Affiliate Sales and Ad Sales. Phillips is responsible for vetting all technical requests and articulating those requests into a clear vision tied to specific goals and strategy. His team develops company-wide technical product roadmaps and partners with engineering on delivery.
Phillips is a seasoned sports media executive and entrepreneur whose experience spans television, digital media and sports properties. Prior to his current role, Phillips was vice president of digital direct-to-consumer services, where he led ESPN’s digital and print subscription business, which included live streaming event packages, ESPN Insider and ESPN The Magazine. Additionally, Phillips served as vice president of ESPN3 and WatchESPN, where he was responsible for the general management and strategic oversight of ESPN’s live multi-screen sports network and product development for WatchESPN across platforms.
He joined ESPN in 2008 after previously serving in various positions with DIRECTV, Disney Regional Entertainment, the NBA and USA Football. Phillips also founded SportsTVInsider, a personalized sports television recommendation engine.
Phillips was named to SportsBusiness Journal’s Forty Under 40 List in 2010. He has also been named to CableFAX’s Most Influential Minorities in Cable list and to its Digital Hot List.
He earned a football scholarship to Stanford University and graduated with honors.
