BCS National Championship: Cable’s Second Biggest Audience of All Time
ESPN Wins the Night, Five-Game BCS Viewership up 7 Percent
Big College Football Audience for ESPN’s Digital Platforms

ESPN’s telecast of the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) National Championship – No. 2 Alabama’s 42-14 victory over No. 1 and previously unbeaten Notre Dame – attracted the second largest audience of any program in cable television history, an average of 17,216,000 households (17.5 Fast National household coverage rating), according to Nielsen. The average of 26,380,000 viewers (P2+) and the US household rating (15.1) were also second best in cable history and the 17.5 coverage rating is ESPN’s second-highest of all time. Full Release

For the “Birds” – New This is SportsCenter Commercial Feature Mascots from Boston College & Temple
The windows are causing issues in Bristol. On Tuesday, ESPN unveiled its new This Is SportsCenter spot. It is called “Birds” and features the mascots from Boston College and Temple, as well as ESPN anchors are Stuart Scott and Chris McKendry. Full Commercial


Wooden Award Midseason List to be Unveiled on ESPNU Thursday
The Wooden Award Midseason Top 25 Presented by Wendy’s will air Thursday, Jan. 10, on ESPNU at 7:30 p.m. The premier men’s college player of the year award highlights the top 25 candidates with extensive coverage also live on ESPN.com.


College GameDay Opens Season From Bristol Studios on Saturday
College GameDay Covered by State Farm kicks off from ESPN’s Bristol, Conn., studios Saturday, Jan. 12, at 10 a.m. on ESPN2, followed by another hour at 11 a.m. on ESPNU. Host Rece Davis will be joined by GameDay regulars Jay Bilas and Digger Phelps, with a special appearance from ESPN analyst Jay Williams. Included in this week’s show will be a review of the first half of the season; images and top plays of the year; what to expect as conference play gets underway and Final Four predictions.

GameDay hits the road for the first on-campus stop of the season Saturday, Jan. 19, from Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, site of No. 9 Gonzaga at No. 14 Butler. Full schedule


Men’s College Basketball: Conference Action Heats Up with a Jam-Packed Saturday
ESPN’s men’s college basketball schedule this week will include 11 games Saturday, Jan. 12, across ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU and exclusively on ESPN3.

ESPN’s Journey to the Tourney, a season-long spotlight on games that will impact the NCAA Championship, continues this week with the ACC top-25 matchup between No. 1 Duke at No. 20 NC State. Duke is one of four teams currently undefeated, while NC State, the preseason favorite to win its league, has just two losses on the season.

Additional schedule highlights:

  • Undefeated, No. 4 Arizona travels to Oregon on Thursday at 9 p.m. on ESPN2 and to Oregon State on Saturday at 8 p.m. on ESPNU
  • No. 9 Gonzaga hosting St. Mary’s (Calif.) on Thursday at 11 p.m. on ESPN2
  • On Saturday, No. 19 Georgetown opens the day at St. John’s at 11 a.m. on ESPN2, while No. 11 Florida travels to LSU at 4 p.m. on ESPNU

Big Ten and Pac-12 Showdowns Highlight ESPN2 Women’s Basketball Schedule
ESPN2 will showcase two top women’s basketball games Sunday, Jan. 13, beginning at 2 p.m. with a doubleheader — Big Ten foes Nebraska at No. 8 Penn State, followed by a 4 p.m. top-10 Pac-12 matchup between No. 7 California at No. 5 Stanford.

Also on Sunday, an ESPNU tripleheader begins at 11:30 a.m. with No. 9 Tennessee at Florida; at 1:30 p.m. with No. 6 Kentucky at Missouri and at 3:30 p.m. with Rutgers at No. 2 Notre Dame.

The Casino Del Sol Football All-Star Game Exclusively Friday on ESPN3
ESPN3 will have exclusive coverage of the Casino Del Sol Football All-Star Game live on Friday, Jan. 11, from Kino Stadium in Tucson, Ariz.  The game, which kicks off at 9 p.m., is the second annual post-season football exhibition of draft-eligible college seniors from Baylor, Brigham Young, Stanford, Kansas State, Florida, Oklahoma, Michigan State and others playing for scouts from the NFL, CFL and Arena teams that will be on site.  Last year’s roster produced six NFL Draft picks and an additional 61 players were entered into NFL training camp in July.

ESPN3 is ESPN’s multi-screen sports network, a live destination that delivers thousands of sports events annually and accessible online at WatchESPN.com, on smartphones and tablets via the WatchESPN app and through ESPN on Xbox LIVE to Gold members.  It is currently available to 83 million homes at no additional cost to fans who receive their high-speed Internet connection or video subscription from an affiliated service provider. The network is also available at no cost to approximately 21 million U.S. college students and U.S.-based military personnel via computers connected to on-campus educational networks and on-base military networks.


Recruiting: No. 1 Andrew Wiggins Plays on ESPN Saturday
Andrew Wiggins (No.1, ESPN 100), the nation’s leading recruit and currently undecided on his college choice, will play Saturday at 4 p.m. on ESPN, when his team, Huntington Prep, faces Cape Henry at Churchland High School from Portsmouth, Va.

Additional ESPN 100 players in the game include No. 26 Xavier Rathan-Mayes, No. 49 Moses Kingsley and No. 81 Dominic Woodson.  Saturday’s game is one of 14 high school basketball games airing across ESPN networks this season in the GEICO ESPN High School Basketball Showcase. Full Schedule
