ESPN Digital Media Collects 104 Million Unique Fans Worldwide in April

Global scale: 104.1 million total unique global visitors, 1.0 billion visits, 6.7 billion minutes, 465 million digital video clips;
In the U.S.: 26th straight month at No. 1 for monthly unique users, total minutes and visits, Top 2 U.S. sports apps.

Thanks to a wide-ranging mix of sports rights around the world – including the start of the MLB regular season, the Men’s and Women’s NCAA Tournament Championships, cricket’s Indian Premier League and ICC World Twenty20, and the NBA Playoffs – ESPN Digital Media reached 104.1 million global unique visitors in April.

ESPN was the most-trafficked sports property in the world for the month, racking up 1.0 billion visits and 6.7 billion minutes of usage, which was +54 percent and +39 percent more, respectively, than the No. 2 sports property (Yahoo Sports/NBC Sports Network). Also, ESPN accounted for 14 percent of all time spent on digital platforms in the global sports category, 39 percent more than the No. 2 property (Yahoo Sports/NBC Sports Network).

In the U.S., April was the 26th consecutive month in which ESPN led the U.S. digital sports category for monthly unique visitors, total minutes and visits. Other results from the April comScore U.S. Multi-Platform report include:

  • ESPN’s digital content reached 80.0 million users in the U.S., 45 percent of all sports category users for the month.
  • ESPN’s lead in monthly unique visitors over the No. 2 property (Yahoo Sports/NBC Sports Network) was 26.9 million in April, 8.7 million more than the margin ESPN held over Yahoo Sports/NBC Sports Network, which was also No. 2 in the same month last year.
  • On mobile devices alone, 64.8 million unique users accessed ESPN web and app content. Users spent 3.5 billion minutes with ESPN on mobile devices.
  • ESPN reached 13.1 million average daily unique users on smartphones, 7.9 million more than No. 2 Bleacher Report-Turner Sports Network (5.2 million).
  • 71 percent of ESPN’s unique users – 56.4 million people – exclusively accessed content on smartphones and tablets. 60 percent of all time spent with ESPN digital content was consumed by mobile device users.
  • ESPN accounted for the top two sports apps on smartphones and tablets in April in terms of unique users, with the ESPN app topping the category (13.4 million), accompanied by No. 2 WatchESPN (6.3 million). The ESPN app also was No. 2 in the sports category for usage with fans spending 1.0 billion minutes with it during the month.
  • ESPN’s portfolio of apps maintained the sports category lead in uniques and minutes, reaching a total of 21.0 million U.S. users who generated 1.9 billion minutes of usage.

  • 7.0 million unique devices streamed WatchESPN content in April, up 44 percent from a year ago. Viewers spent 1.8 billion minutes with programming across all platforms (up 105 percent). 1

  • ESPN Audio logged 610.5 million live streaming minutes in April, including a 37 percent increase on mobile devices compared to the same month last year.2
