Tennis: US Open Series Continues on ESPN2, ESPN3; ATP from Hamburg on ESPN3

Tennis’ Emirates Airline US Open Series continues this week with the ATP BB&T Atlanta Open and the WTA Mercury Insurance Open from Carlsbad, Calif.  ESPN2 and ESPN3 will present live quarterfinal and semifinal action on Friday-Saturday, July 20-21, with the finals live Sunday, July 22 at 3 p.m. ET and 5 p.m., respectively.  Sam Gore will call the action in Atlanta with Jimmy Arias and Brad Gilbert.  In California, Ted Robinson will work with Rennae Stubbs. 

The USOS returns to Atlanta but in a new venue and with a field dominated by Americans – Andy Roddick, Mardy Fish, John Isner and James Blake.  Fish defeated Isner for the title last year.  In Carlsbad, the top seeds are Marion Bartoli at No. 1, followed by Dominika Cibulkova, Jelena Jankovic, Nadia Petrova and Christina McHale of New Jersey. 

The US Open Series consists of nine hard court tournaments (two have both men and women) across North America over eight weeks with a points system and prize money tied to the US Open that follows.  ESPN2 will televise nearly 100 hours fromNew Yorkstarting Monday, Aug. 27. 

In addition, this week ESPN3 continues its leading tennis schedule with four days of action from the German Tennis Championships from Hamburg.  Action starts Thursday, July 19 and culminates Sunday, July 22.  Nicolas Almagro of Spain is the top seed and Juan Monaco of Argentina in No. 3 (No. 2 seed and defending champion Gilles Simon of France has lost this week).

ESPN’s summer series — SportsCenter “My Wish” – continues with three wishes through Friday, July 20. The program features athletes from professional sports in sports-themed wishes granted by the Make-A-Wish Foundation on ESPN’s seventh annual series. Each wish will be the subject of a SportsCenter feature segment during the 3 p.m. show. Photos 

Wednesday, July 18: Rory McIlroy with 13-year-old Tucker Dupont from Waconia, Minn., who has had three open heart surgeries. He can no longer compete in contact sports, but plays golf and got to spend a day with his favorite golfer and hero. 

Thursday, July 19: Alexander Ovechkin with 16-year-old Sam Jacobson from Boise, Idaho, who plays on his high school hockey team despite recovering from lymphoma. He got to skate with his hero, Ovechkin, and ride a Zamboni at a Capitals game. 

Friday, July 20: Mark Sanchez with 13-year-old Jesus Reyes from Beulaville, N.C., who beat leukemia. He got to meet his hero, attend a Jets game, and sign a “contract” with the team as honorary member for the day.

Hamilton, Rangers to Visit Pujols, Angels on Sunday Night Baseball

Josh Hamilton will lead the AL West-leading Texas Rangers into Anaheim to take on Albert Pujols and the second-place Los Angeles Angels July 22 on ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball. Coverage will begin at 8 p.m. with NSSA Sportscaster of the Year Dan Shulman providing commentary with analysts Orel Hershiser and Terry Francona and reporter Buster Olney. Sunday Night Baseball is also available on ESPN Radio (with Jon Sciambi and Chris Singleton), ESPN Deportes, ESPN Mobile TV, ESPN3 and WatchESPN.

 

 

Phil Mickelson Stars in Latest This is SportsCenter Spot

Three-time Masters champion Phil Mickelson makes his This is SportsCenter debut on Wednesday, July 18. In the new spot, Mickelson coaches anchor Scott Van Pelt on posture and delivery from the SportsCenter set. Mickelson will be competing in The Open Championship, which airs live on ESPN starting Thursday, July 19. Wieden + Kennedy serves as the creative agency for this campaign.

 

 

NASCAR Now Leads to Brickyard 400

ESPN2’s daily NASCAR news and information program NASCAR Now will air Monday, July 23, at 3 p.m. with a preview of the Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. On Sunday, July 29, the race will jump start ESPN’s coverage of the final 17 races of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season.  Shannon Spake will host.

 

 

Former Featherweight Title Challenger Meets Undefeated Junior Lightweight on ESPN’s Friday Night Fights

The July 20 edition of ESPN’s Friday Night Fights presented by Corona Extra will include Ring Magazine’s No.8 ranked Junior Lightweight Juan Carlos “Mini” Burgos (29-1, 19 KOs) and undefeated Junior Lightweight Cesar “Saba” Vazquez (25-0, 16 KOs) in a 10-round Junior Lightweight main event at 9 p.m. on ESPN2 HD, ESPN Deportes, and ESPN3. 

Joe Tessitore and Teddy Atlas will be ringside for ESPN2 HD and ESPN3 from Laughlin, Nev., describing the action, while studio host Bernardo Osuna will present the latest boxing news and highlights. Alex Pombo and Delvin Rodriguez will call the fights for ESPN Deportes’ Viernes de Combates with Leopoldo Gonzalez and Pablo Viruega in the studio. 

On ESPN2 and ESPN3, Danny Garcia’s upset win last week over former Super Light Welterweight titlist Amir Khan will be reviewed. In addition, highlights from this week’s Saul Alvarez-Josesito Lopez press conference and the Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.- Sergio Martinez press tour. Read more.

 

 

Top High School Competition on ESPNU, ESPN3

The nation’s standout high school basketball, football, and lacrosse players will compete at the ESPN Wide World of Sports in Walt Disney World during the ESPNHS Games. ESPNU and ESPN3 will bring fans coverage of the country’s elite players in two AAU Boys Basketball Super Showcase presented by Champion games and football’s Champion Gridiron Kings competition. ESPNU will also carry the boys’ Champion All-American Lacrosse Showcase on Friday, July 27 at 7 p.m. 

This year’s Super Showcase games will begin Wednesday, July 25, at 7 p.m. and include nine players from the ESPN 100 list such as: No. 2 Julius Randle (Texas Titans) and No. 3 Andrew Harrison (Houston Defenders). ESPN recruiting analysts Paul Biancardi and Dave Telep will call the games with college basketball reporter Andy Katz. 

The Champion Gridiron Kings, airing Sunday, July 29, at 7 p.m., is the nation’s elite high school football event featuring 64 of the best skill position players in the country and will feature 7-on-7 games, skill challenges and performance training. Senior Director of Recruiting Tom Luginbill will provide insight on the players’ performance and their potential transitions to the college game with play-by-play commentator Adam Amin and reporter Maria Taylor.
