Michael Pierce

ESPN Legal Department Vice President, Deputy Chief Counsel

Michael Pierce joined the ESPN legal department in 1995.  His current duties include legal oversight of the affiliate sales and marketing department, advertising sales (including commercial operations and standards and practices), marketing, research, ESPN Enterprises, FCC and legislative matters as the vice president and deputy chief counsel.

Prior to joining ESPN, Pierce was in private practice at Dow, Lohnes & Albertson, a Washington, D.C. based law firm specializing in intellectual property and communications law.  While at the firm, he represented a number of clients in the cable and broadcast industry, including Cox, Comcast, Cablevision Industries, Newhouse, A.H. Belo, the Sci-Fi Channel and Gannett.  Pierce practiced law in Washington between 1990 and 1995.

Prior to becoming an attorney, he was vice president, assistant media director at Ogilvy & Mather, a New York based advertising agency.  His clients included American Express, TWA, Hardee’s, Hershey, General Foods and Fortune Magazine.

Pierce began his career in media on the production side, working at WSPA-TV, the local CBS affiliate in Spartanburg, S.C.

Pierce is a graduate of the University of Georgia, receiving a bachelor’s degree in journalism as well as a master’s degree in television production management.  He graduated from Columbia University School of Law with a J.D. in 1990.
