Doubleheader Up Double-Digits Compared to 2016

ESPN’s NBA season-opening doubleheader on Oct. 18 averaged a 1.6 metered market rating, matching the company’s second-highest rated NBA opening night ever with 2002 and 2015, according to Nielsen. The two-game average was up 14 percent from a 1.4 in 2016.

Last night’s Washington Wizards vs. Philadelphia 76ers telecast, which was exclusively on ESPN, delivered a 1.6 metered market rating, up 23 percent from a 1.3 for ESPN’s first game in 2016 – the 76ers vs. the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Wednesday’s nightcap – a matchup between the San Antonio Spurs and the Minnesota Timberwolves – also generated a 1.6 metered market rating, even with last year’s comparable game – the Houston Rockets vs. the Los Angeles Lakers.

ESPN’s NBA season-opening coverage continues on Friday, Oct. 20, as the Cleveland Cavaliers visit the Milwaukee Bucks at 7 p.m., followed by the Golden State Warriors at New Orleans Pelicans at 9:30 p.m.
