The 2012 ESPYS: Live on Wednesday

The 2012 ESPYS Presented by Capital One, hosted by Rob Riggle, will feature the world’s premier athletes and some of Hollywood’s biggest stars for the 20th annual celebration of the best moments from the year in sports. The 2012 ESPYS will be televised live from the Nokia Theatre at L.A. LIVE on Wednesday, July 11, at 9 p.m. ET on ESPN.


The complete list of The 2012 ESPYS nominees is available at http://es.pn/2012ESPYSNominees (for media) and ESPN.com/ESPYS (for voters). Voting is underway and, aside from Best Team, all categories will close when the live show starts Wednesday, July 11, at 9 p.m. on ESPN. The Best Team category will stay open for voting on ESPN.com/ESPYS during the live show. Additionally, fans can vote on Twitter using the hashtag #BestTeam. ESPN.com and Twitter votes will be combined at the end of the show to determine the winner.


This year’s scheduled presenters include Jessica Biel (Total Recall), Jordana Brewster (Dallas), Kenny Chesney (Welcome to the Fishbowl), Cody Horn (Magic Mike), Jimmie Johnson, Joel McHale (Community), Olivia Munn (The Newsroom), Danica Patrick, Jeremy Renner (The Bourne Legacy), and Shaun White. The show will feature musical performances by Nas.

In addition, top athletes scheduled to attend include: Carlos Bocanegra, Victor Cruz, Brittney Griner, Robert Griffin III, Rob Gronkowski, Calvin Johnson, Tony La Russa, Jeremy Lin, Lisa Leslie, Evan Longoria, Eli Manning, Mario Manningham, Aaron Rodgers, Matthew Stafford, Justin Tuck, Lindsey Vonn, Brian Wilson, Vince Young and others.


The ESPYS gather top celebrities from sports and entertainment to commemorate the past year in sports by recognizing major sports achievements, reliving unforgettable moments and saluting the leading performers and performances. The 2012 ESPYS will recognize both sport-specific achievements, such as “Best MLB Player” and “Best WNBA Player,” as well as categories, such as “Best Team” or “Best Female Athlete” that pit nominees from different sports against each other. The ESPYS honor ESPN’s commitment to The V Foundation for Cancer Research, a partnership launched with the late Jim Valvano at the inaugural ESPYS in 1993.

ESPN3 and WatchESPN Record Its Best Month Ever, Surpassing 1 Billion Minutes in June

In June, ESPN3 and WatchESPN reached a milestone, logging 1.1 billion minutes viewed across computers, smartphones, tablets and Xbox to record its best month ever.  It also logged an average minute audience of 24,467 across platforms, up 452 percent compared to the same month last year on computers.  Additionally, the WatchESPN app for smartphones and tablets surpassed 10 million downloads.

EURO 2012 was the most viewed event for the month, accounting for the largest share of total minutes seen across platforms.  Other key events that contributed to viewership included the NBA Playoffs and Finals, French Open, Wimbledon and the NCAA Baseball Championships.

San Francisco Giants All-Star catcher Buster Posey and Olympic swimmer Natalie Coughlin make their This is SportsCenter debuts Monday, July 9. In “Umpire,” Posey is saved from an overbearing umpire by ESPN anchor Sage Steele. In “Silver and Gold,” Coughlin catches the Notre Dame Leprechaun in her cubicle trying to take off with her well-earned gold. The spots were created in collaboration with Wieden + Kennedy.

Social Campaign Highlights ESPN Promotion of Home Run Derby

In addition to a robust television, radio and digital campaign, ESPN will promote the 2012 State Farm Home Run Derby with a unique social contest for viewers. Using the #HRDerby hashtag, fans will be prompted by ESPN’s Twitter handle (@ESPN) to participate in a dynamic conversation throughout the Home Run Derby. Fans will have an opportunity to win prizes for correctly predicting the number of home runs and the farthest distance of home runs in each round. Athletes, celebrities and ESPN talent will also drive the conversation by tweeting with the same hashtag. The Home Run Derby begins at 8 p.m. on ESPN live from Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, Mo.

NASCAR Nationwide Series at New Hampshire on ESPN

The NASCAR Nationwide Series races live Saturday, July 14, at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon, N.H., on ESPN and WatchESPN. NASCAR Countdown is at 2:30 p.m. with the race’s green flag at 3:46 p.m.  Also from New Hampshire, ESPN2 airs NASCAR Nationwide Series qualifying on Saturday at 10 a.m. Anchor Allen Bestwick and analysts Rusty Wallace and Andy Petree will call the action.

U.S. Senior Open Championship on ESPN Platforms

The world’s top senior golfers will be in action this week in the U.S. Senior Open Championship in Lake Orion, Mich. Live coverage of the first two rounds will air on ESPN2, ESPN3 and WatchESPN on Thursday and Friday, July 12-13, from 3-7 p.m. Sean McDonough will anchor with two-time U.S. Open champions Andy North and Curtis Strange.

SportsCenter Special AFC East Divisional Preview Show

ESPN will highlight the AFC East in a one-hour SportsCenter Special on Tuesday, July 10, at 8 p.m. Host Sara Walsh and analysts Hugh Douglas and Antonio Pierce will breakdown the entire division, including key offseason acquisitions, top storylines and 2012 schedules for the defending AFC champion Patriots, Jets, Bills and Dolphins.

The final show of ESPN’s eight-installment Divisional Preview specials will air next Tuesday (July 17), spotlighting the AFC West.
